Why Therapy Requires Commitment and Consistency

Something I wish more people understood — and something I wish I’d known when I first started therapy — is that therapy isn’t meant to be a quick fix. It’s a process that requires commitment, consistency, and patience in order to create deep, lasting change.

It’s a very human reaction to reach for help when we’re in crisis. The moment we feel we’re barely staying above water — when overwhelm, panic, or overwhelm set in — we reach out to a doctor, a therapist, or a professional.

And that makes perfect sense. It’s often when our typical coping strategies stop working that we realize we need help.

But if we only come to therapy when we’re in crisis, we miss a huge opportunity. Because real, lasting change isn’t something we can squeeze into a handful of sessions when things are falling apart. It happens slowly, over time, through a consistent, trusting relationship.

Why Consistency Counts

Showing up regularly lets us do more than just put a temporary bandage on whatever feels overwhelming in the moment. It lets us get to the roots of your struggles — not just the symptoms — and start making deep, durable changes.

Instead of always reacting to crisis after crisis, we can become more proactive. We can track progress, connect the dots, and piece together patterns in your thinking, relationships, and nervous system responses. That kind of understanding lets you respond differently in future situations — not because you’re forcing it, but because you’re growing and changing from the inside, and your neural network has begun to rewire.

Consistent Sessions Build Trust — Between Us and Within Yourself

Showing up each week lets me get to know you on a much more intimate level. It means we’re not starting from scratch each time we meet; we’re able to pick up where we left off and go a little deeper.

This kind of continuity lets us celebrate small wins (which I wrote about here), navigate obstacles together, and learn from whatever comes up — all in a space you know is non-judgmental and reliable.

Consistent therapy also signals something powerful to yourself: you’re worth this. Your struggles matter enough to be addressed. Your goals, your peace of mind, and your future are worth investing in — not just when you feel like you’re drowning, but all the time.

Making It Happen

If you’re wondering how to make this a reality in your busy life, you can be direct with your therapist.

Say: “I’d like to come in weekly. Do you have a spot I can keep?”

Most therapists appreciate this kind of consistency; it makes their schedules more predictable and lets them plan your sessions in a way that supports your progress.

This might mean choosing a specific time and day each week — a Tuesday afternoon, a Thursday morning — whatever fits your schedule. Having it on the calendar lets you prioritize it, form a habit, and treat it as a non-negotiable in your routines.

Final Thoughts

Your progress in therapy depends less on dramatic breakthroughs and more on small, consistent choices. Showing up regularly lets us do deep, transformational work together — not just putting out fires, but strengthening you from the ground up.

This is what we call the “mechanism of change”— and if you’re looking for in-person or online therapy in BC, I’d be honored to walk alongside you on this journey.

With love,

Julia Bursey, RCC
